The short version

The reason for going out alone was simple enough: on bigger contracts the person who quotes the job is rarely the person who does it, and the customer ends up explaining the problem three times. Working for himself means the person who answers the phone is the person who turns up, and the person who has to come back if it is not right.

How I work

Shoes off or boot covers on. Dust sheets down. The fuse board labelled properly before I leave, which is a small thing until the night you are standing in front of it with a torch. A price agreed before work starts, and a straight answer when something is going to cost more than you hoped.

And the paperwork done: certificates issued and notified rather than promised. Plenty of electrical work is only as good as the test results behind it, and you should be holding those.

Local matters more than it sounds

Knowing the housing stock saves time, and time is what you are paying for. The ex-council estates round Witney have a particular vintage of fuse board. The Oxford terraces have borrowed neutrals between circuits that were split into flats in the eighties. Burford and Woodstock have stone walls nobody should be chasing. Turning up already knowing the likely answer is most of the job.
