Sockets and lighting
Sockets, switches and lighting
The small jobs that make a house easier to live in, and the ones most people put off for years because of the extension lead that has become furniture.
Extra sockets where you actually need them, USB points beside beds, a proper supply to a garden office or a shed, outdoor sockets that are weatherproof rather than optimistic, and lighting that is wired to switch the way you would expect it to.
Downlights are worth a word of warning: in a ceiling under a bedroom they need fire-rated fittings, and in an insulated loft they need the right clearance or they cook themselves. It costs almost nothing to do properly and it is a common EICR observation when it is not.
Questions
About this work
Can you add a socket without making a mess?
Mostly, yes. Chasing a wall means plaster repair, so where a surface route or a floor-void run works, that is usually the tidier answer. I will show you the options before cutting anything.
Do small jobs get a certificate?
Alterations to an existing circuit get a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate. A brand new circuit gets a full installation certificate.

Fault finding & repairs
Most call-outs start here: something has stopped working, or the fuse board keeps throwing the whole house into darkness and nobody knows why.
Fuse board upgrades
If one fault takes out the whole house, or the board still has rewirable fuses, it is doing a job that modern boards do far better.
EICRs & safety checks
An Electrical Installation Condition Report tells you the actual state of the wiring, with anything dangerous coded so you know what must be done and what can wait.
EV charger installation
A home charger is mostly an electrical job rather than a car one: what matters is the supply into the house, the main fuse, and how the cable gets to where you park.
Rewires
A rewire is the job nobody wants and plenty of older properties round here eventually need — usually the ones still running rubber or fabric-insulated cable.
