Fault finding and repairs
Electrical fault finding and repairs
Most call-outs start here: something has stopped working, or the fuse board keeps throwing the whole house into darkness and nobody knows why.
Fault finding is the part of this trade that rewards testing over guessing. An RCD that trips every few days is usually moisture or a deteriorating cable rather than the thing you happened to plug in, and the only way to prove it is insulation resistance testing circuit by circuit. That is what the first hour on site is for.
Intermittent faults are the ones people live with for months. A loose connection in a socket behind the sofa, a nail through a cable from a flat-pack wardrobe, a cooker point that has been quietly cooking itself since 1987. Once it is found, most are a quick repair.
Questions
About this work
How long does fault finding take?
Most faults are traced within the first hour, which the call-out covers. Genuinely buried faults in older wiring can take longer, and I will tell you where we are before the clock runs on.
Can you fix it the same visit?
Usually. The van carries the common parts: sockets, switches, breakers, RCBOs, cable and connectors. Anything unusual gets made safe and fitted on a return visit at an agreed price.

Other services
While I am there
Fuse board upgrades
If one fault takes out the whole house, or the board still has rewirable fuses, it is doing a job that modern boards do far better.
EICRs & safety checks
An Electrical Installation Condition Report tells you the actual state of the wiring, with anything dangerous coded so you know what must be done and what can wait.
EV charger installation
A home charger is mostly an electrical job rather than a car one: what matters is the supply into the house, the main fuse, and how the cable gets to where you park.
Sockets & lighting
The small jobs that make a house easier to live in, and the ones most people put off for years because of the extension lead that has become furniture.
Rewires
A rewire is the job nobody wants and plenty of older properties round here eventually need — usually the ones still running rubber or fabric-insulated cable.
