EV charger installation
EV charger installation
A home charger is mostly an electrical job rather than a car one: what matters is the supply into the house, the main fuse, and how the cable gets to where you park.
Every install starts with the boring bit — checking the incoming supply, the main fuse rating and the earthing arrangement, then a load calculation so the charger does not trip the house every time the oven and shower run together. Where the supply will not carry it, load curtailment sorts it without an expensive upgrade from the network operator.
Then it is the install itself: a dedicated circuit from the board, a tidy cable run that does not look like an afterthought, and commissioning with the app set up before I leave. Notifiable work, so it is certified and registered.
Questions
About this work
Will my supply take a 7kW charger?
Most houses will, with a load calculation to confirm it. Where it is tight, the charger can be set to back off when the rest of the house is drawing heavily.
Can you fit one in a flat or a shared drive?
Sometimes, but it depends on the supply route and permission from the freeholder or management company. Worth a phone call before committing to a charger.

Fault finding & repairs
Most call-outs start here: something has stopped working, or the fuse board keeps throwing the whole house into darkness and nobody knows why.
Fuse board upgrades
If one fault takes out the whole house, or the board still has rewirable fuses, it is doing a job that modern boards do far better.
EICRs & safety checks
An Electrical Installation Condition Report tells you the actual state of the wiring, with anything dangerous coded so you know what must be done and what can wait.
Sockets & lighting
The small jobs that make a house easier to live in, and the ones most people put off for years because of the extension lead that has become furniture.
Rewires
A rewire is the job nobody wants and plenty of older properties round here eventually need — usually the ones still running rubber or fabric-insulated cable.
